Artist Statement:
Gerard Manley Hopkins, a Jesuit priest and poet, believed that nature was the key to both perceptual reality and the perception of reality from the inner mind. Hopkins first coined the term "Inscape" to mean just this. An "Inscape" is derived directly from nature but allows for an internal awareness of sense-of-place to be recognized by intuitive impulses and spatially edited on-the-spot within the mind.
The intuitive process of painting and drawing spaces within nature interests me most. Working up a surface within nature helps to feed my more studio-based work. Like Hopkins, I am inspired by the outward and inner beauty of the landscape and placing an importance on the moment. Recent work is increasingly more abstract in its application of a varied and lyrical mark-making system.
The work is divided in two parts in the art display with one area reserved for nature-based work (plein-air) and another area for studio-based work.
